 Tax season is here and it is not just income taxes that are due but property taxes as well. In order to avoid any penalties you must pay before January 31st, 2012. If you bought a home in 2011 that is your homestead (principle residence) and now is also the time to apply for your homestead exemption on the property. A homestead exemption is a benefit to homeowners that removes part of the home's value from taxation, thereby lowering your taxes. Other exemptions are available as well including one for homeowners over 65 and disabled homeowners.
