Turning up the heat in winter can cause your electrical bill to be slightly higher than normal. These 6 simple tips can help you save on your energy costs. 1) Seal your electrical outlets in the exterior walls of your home. 2) Install a high-performance shower head. By switching from a 2½-gpm to a 1½-gpm model you could save about $88 a year on water and energy costs with gas water heating and $135 a year with electric. 3) Replace incandescent bulbs with CFLs (compact fluorescent lightbulbs). 4) Wash your clothes in cold water. This will help you save up to 90% on the cost of cleaning your clothes. Also, remember to wait till you have a full load before starting the washing machine. 5) Upgrade your heating and cooling system to a programmable system. Properly progarmming your system to heat and cool at times when your home is vacant can really reduce the cost of your electric bill. 6) Close or Open your blinds. Leaving the blinds closed during the hot temperatures can help so that your cooling system is not over working. Also, leaving the blinds open during the cold months will allow the sun to help heat your home.
