Home_SecurityAn increase in holiday shopping can also mean an increase in burglaries.  Although a home alarm is a huge asset, it should not be your only means of security.  Here are a few tips to make sure your home is secure during the holiday season.  1) Lock yourself out.  If you can get into your home without a key, then a professional can certainly do so.  2) A dog is a great device to help deter a burglar.  If the burglar knows he will have to deal with your pooch, he will be less likely to enter your home. 3) Keep all entrances well lit.  In a break in situation this could help your neighbors spot the unwanted guests. 7) In conjunction with the last tip, it is very important to establish good relationships with your neighbors.  Your neighbors can accept packages while your away from home and can even watch over your house when your gone.  Once a solid relationship is established, it is also a good idea to give your neighbor a spare key (rather than hiding a spare under a rock).  4) When leaving your home for the evening, leave a few lights on and close all windows.  Even though you would like to display your Christmas Tree it is important to remember you are also displaying your presents that you worked hard for.  5) Avoid putting packaging and boxes on the curb.  If a burglar sees a box to your brand new laptop or I-pad they are more likely to want to come inside and check out the merchandise. 6) Don't leave your valuables in obvious places.  Investing in a safe is a very smart and safe idea. 7) Keep all bushes and hedges trimmed.  This will make it less likely that someone could hid behind your greenery.  Also, gravel beds are a great idea, because they can help you hear someone lurking around your home.  8) Always make sure your doors are strong and secure.  9) Lock windows with removable eye bolts. 10) Remember small details such as lawn maintenance, picking up packages, and removing the newspaper when you are away on vacation. It is extremely important to have someone do these small items while your out of town.  You do not want it to be blatantly obvious that you are not home.

Following these small tips will help to ensure a safe and happy holiday season!
