McAllen Real Estate - Residential

fireplace_safetyAs the season for using your chimneys draws near, here are some safety tips provided by the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) to help you and your family avoid chimney fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. Check your chimney every year to make sure your chimney system and venting systems are working. Burn only well-seasoned hardwoods to reduce buildup of creosote, a flammable compound. Install a chimney cap to keep out debris and to prevent birds and animals from nesting. Install a carbon monoxide detector to warn your family of harmful gases entering your home. A blocked or damaged chimney could cause this. Waterproof your chimney to prevent long-term corrosion and masonry damage. You should also avoid rebuilding old chimneys by replacing damaged clay liners with stainless-steel chimney liner pipes. You should also inspect and maintain your chimney flashing (the seal between the chimney and the roof). Finally, install a sealing damper to save energy and eliminate off-season odors.
