With the approach of fall bird migration, birds that migrate for a short distance or far away, have to "bulk up" to sustain themselves on their journeys. Bird visits to feeders will suddenly pick up as birds begin to accumulate a lot of fat. During the summer, you may have depleted your stock of seed and suet, so you can be on the lookout for stock-up sales at local bird supply stores. Besides keeping your bird feeders regularly stocked, you should also keep birdbaths clear of debris and fill them with fresh water regularly to serve local and migrating birds that stop by for refueling. You can also look for nursery sales of native plants, which will attract native insects which is another source of food for birds. To protect your bird food from other critters, store your birdseed in metal containers. And then, kick back and enjoy the view!
