Children's bathrooms not only need to be safe and kid-friendly, but they also must be able to grow with the children and their changing needs. Consider lowering the vanity countertop height or include a lift-out step in a bottom vanity drawer. Look for a toilet with a seat that takes the child from potty training to adulthood. Maybe even one that features a quiet-close seat to take the "bang" out of closing the lid. Storage is definitely important. Have containers where toys, bottles, and other items can be stored on the floor and lower shelves. You could also try having built-in vanity cabinets. If you provide a space for everything, the children can help keep their bathroom neat and clean. To make the bathroom even safer, include a graduated step down into the tub basin. Consider installing an extra hand-held shower head to get shampoo out of your children's hair and to help keep your tub clean. Also have faucets with anti-scald valves that will prevent hot-water burns and adjustable shower bars to help keep children safe as they grow. Non-slip, easy-clean surfaces in the tub, on the floors and sinks will also help prevent falls and spills. Another feature to try to have are D-handle drawer pulls and levers that are easier to grab and pull instead of knobs. Also, towel rings and hooks for washcloths, towels, and robes are easier for children than towel bars. It will encourage them to hang up towels and robes rather than leaving them on the floor. You can have a practical and durable bathroom that will last for years if you invest in some of these child-friendly features right from the very beginning.
