Patterns can be tricky so people shy away from them sometimes when decorating their home interiors, but patterns and color add visual interest to a room. Varying pattern size adds dimension to a room. Not every pattern should be the same size and variety, otherwise things can look too matched and staged. Try varying patterns of similar colors but experiment with size . For example, place a largely patterned area rug on the floor and have an ottoman with a medium-sized pattern as an accessory. You can add more style and interest by alternating throw pillows in a floral or paisley print with subtle stripes. The texture of the fabrics, however, should match. When selecting patterns, choose similarly colored items. This way even if the fabrics or patterns aren't exactly the same, they'll look cohesive through color. If you want a room to feel more upbeat, use complementary opposite colors. If you are looking for a more soothing atmosphere, try colors from the same family--just vary the intensity of the shades. Before long, you will be feeling more confident about creating your own unique style and feel.
