Awnings are a beautiful and practical solution forproviding much needed shade in South Texas homes. The fabric should complement the style of the home and the landscape/setting. For example, you should use neutral, earthy tones for woodland areas and bright ones for seashore or poolside areas. A look that fits every style of home are black and white stripes. Forest green, neutrals or navy go well with traditional architectural styles. Bar stripes may work for colonials or cottage -style homes. Beige, salmon or terra-cotta stripes may work well with Southwestern-style and stucco-sided homes. For traditional homes, stay with straight-lined awnings. For contemporary homes, use scalloped or notched-edged valances. For homes with a lot of angled rooflines or architectural details, keep the awning design simple and the fabric solid. Small stripes may look busy on a large piece of fabric and wide-stripes can overpower a small one. You can perk up a solid awning with scalloped, keyhole or notched-edged valances, contrasting trim or tassels. You can coordinate awning fabrics with your home's exterior colors --trim, shingles and exterior paint. You can also extend your interior style with colors and patterns from the adjoining interior rooms. As many designers say, "They should be a reflection of your personality."
