Fences serve various purposes and come in several designs, materials and prices. The first thing to consider is for what purpose do you want your fence: security, containment, aesthetics, property line divider, space definer, noise barrier or visual barrier. Wood panel fencing is typically sold in 8 foot panels which are 4-6 feet tall and are usually made of pressure-treated wood which can be stained or painted. Post and rail fencing is usually about 3-5 feet tall and is sold in 8-11 foot sections. Vinyl fencing is maintenance-free and resistant to snow, ice, rain, rot and insect damage. They often resemble wood panel or split rail wood fencing and are available in a wide variety of colors. Polymer fencing is constructed to resemble wrought iron fencing and requires very little maintenance, is easy to install and is rust-free. Basket weave and Lattice Fencing features a series of woven or crisscrossed strips of wood or vinyl which create a decorative pattern and can serve as privacy fences if tall enough. Picket Fencing gives a traditional, cottage-style feel and provides decorative fencing, pet containment or defines property lines.
