With more homeowners becoming more environmentally conscious, more of them are opting for green home improvements. Something that homeowners are doing in 2011 is using LED lighting, low-VOCs paints, natural materials and water saving fixtures. They are also using products that increase indoor air quality and that allow natural light through the use of skylights and energy-efficinet windows. Also being used throughout the house are more recycled and reused materials. More emphasis is being placed on natural resources that can be harvested without harming the environment, like cork and bamboo, which will play a larger role in flooring and furniture. Also being installed in more homes are water efficient faucets, dual-flush toilets, front-load washers, low-flow showerheads, as well as tankless hot water heaters. Homeowners are also embracing greener plumbing systems, such as gray water recovery and solar options. Two other trends are smart metering where utilities can set back your system when it needs to modulate power usage on a wide scale and distribute clean engery on a residential scale. Also being promoted is wrapping the whole house with one inch foam and air sealing the attic to conserve energy. Some homeowners are also putting in a radon which acts as a moisture vent, ventilating dirty air. These and many more new trends are making it possible for today's homeowners to live in a green living home.
