When purchasing a home security system, there are two costs involved. The first is the cost of the equipment which can run from $250 to $700. The second one is the monthly monitoring fee for 24/7 surveillance which can be from $35 to $75 a month. Having a home security system may qualify you for a home insurance discount; talk to your insurance company. There are wired and wireless systems. Some critics of the wireless systems believe that a wireless system can be disabled more easily than one that is wired. Some add-ons can be sensors or motion detectors to help with fire, carbon monoxide poisoning or a wearable "panic button" for elderly or others. Other home security systems can also adjust your home's temperature, turn lights on and off, and water your plants when the soil dries out. A system like that could cost about $5,000. Whatever security system you get, everyone in the family should know how to use it and should be used daily. And, do use your new home security system stickers and signs to let everyone know you have an active system. Just that alone, keeps potential criminals away from your home.
