There are signs that the housing market could be headed in the right direction with an increase in new home construction that started in the beginning of 2012. Housing starts and building permits first began to rise in January. "Building permits, which are less affected by weather than starts, came in at a 676,000 annual rate in January, up .7% from the prior month and 19% from a year earlier." Even though residential building has a long way to go in order to reach the pre-2007 level, it does appear that the economy is starting to rebuild and so are hopeful home owners. In order for the economy to fully recover we will need the job market to also increase. With the addition of many jobs in McAllen through health care, education, retail, renewable resources, and customer care centers, McAllen could be back in business in no time. Gus Faucher, senior economist at PNC Financial Services Group stated, "continued pick-up in job growth this year could support faster consumer spending growth and a stronger rebound in housing."

Recent unemployment numbers ranked Hidalgo and Cameron counties as the highest in the state. However, companies in the McAllen area are joining forces to change not only the unemployment rate, but also the perception the rest of the state has of our area. Health care, education, and retail are among Hidalgo County's top employment sectors. Renewable energy programs and customer care centers are also adding to the jobs available for our area residents. Woods & Poole Economics have estimated that McAllen will add over 80,000 jobs within the next decade. "With hiring on an upward trend since the 2008 recession started tapering off, McAllen has seen a faster recovery than most other metro areas, even if it is not evident in the unemployment rate," says Jared Janes of the McAllen Monitor. This is largely because of the rapidly growing population. For example, "McAllen's unemployment rate in October was one-tenth of a percentage point higher than the previous year despite having 6,000 more jobs." Keith Patridge, the president and CEO of the McAllen Economic Development Corp. believes that companies will start up projects that were delayed by the recession. He believes that, "If the U.S. economy continues to rebound, Valley manufacturers that supply the maquila industry should see growth once production picks up in the Mexican factories." Although there still is some uncertainty, "the valley will continue to receive a boost from strong economic fundamentals such as a young work force and its low cost of living."
